The Southside Virginia Angus Association has a long and rich history with one of the oldest, continuously run Regional Assocation sales in the state of Virginia. We are proud to help our members in promoting outstanding Angus genetics from the Southside Virginia Region.

Our Annual "Foundation Female" Sale is held the second Saturday in November and features an outstanding group of open and bred heifers, cow calf pairs and bred cows...make plans now to join us!

2011 Southside Angus Annual Meeting

THURSDAY, MARCH 24, 2011

The Southside Virginia Angus Association held their annual meeting and dinner on March 24, 2011 at FFF Hunting Preserve south of Keysville. Approximately 65 members and supporters turned out for the meeting. Guess were greeted by the aroma of the Roundman’s BBQ cookers as they served appetizers consisting of meatballs, cheeses, and jalapeño poppers. Chaplain Robert Woodfin opened the festivities with a blessing immediately before the mouthwatering CAB Prime Rib dinner. After the meal, Southside President Jerry Gustin introduced the guest speaker, Mr. Tad Melton, the Chairperson Elect of the Virginia 4-H Foundation. Tad gave an excellent presentation that was well received by the membership. One comment indicated that we now feel like we are in on the latest developments with the Virginia 4-H Foundation and all of us know a lot more about the workings of 4-H than we ever did before We had no idea that the intercity youth were so heavily involved in 4-H and that the percentages of urban youth in 4-H was so high. Tad’s presentation is available on the Southside Virginia Angus Association website at www.southsidevaangus.org.Gustin also made a presentation to the Roundman’s BBQ team on behalf of Anne Cardwell, Director of Promotion, Virginia Beef Industry Council. The team was commended for their professionalism in preparing and serving their excellent Beef dinners. Each member received a Beef—It’s What’s For Dinner tote bag, a meat thermometer, hot pads and a package of steak seasoning.Mike McDowell, Locust Level Farm received special recognition for his high selling lot during the November Sale. McDowell and family also hosted the sale at their farm. The McDowells always do a great job in rolling out the red carpet for the sale consignors and buyers and facilitate an excellent sale. Robert Tucker, who volunteers his services as the auctioneer, was also recognized for his contribution. During a short business meeting, Pete Henderson, Southside Treasurer, recapped the organization’s financial status and emphasized that active support from the membership in paying dues has allowed Southside to stay in a black ink position and to be able to make donations such as the Piedmont Area Junior Livestock Association and the Virginia 4-H Foundation. Southside looks forward to similar type sponsorships in the future. Officers and Board Members were then elected for 2011. The new officers are: President, Jerry Gustin, Vice-President, James Arroyo, Secretary/Treasurer, Pete Henderson, Educational Advisor, Cynthia Gregg and Sale Consultant, Jeff Powers. The Board of Directors are: Paul Bennett, David Buchanan, Jon Collins, Mike DeVaughn, David Lee, Mike McDowell, Dale Moore, Zach Tucker, and Chaplin, Robert Woodfin. 2011 Southside Angus Foundation Female Sale Report

The Southside Virginia Angus Association held it’s Annual “Foundation Female” Sale onSaturday, November 12, 2011 at Locust Level Farm, Vernon Hill, VA. The warm beautifulfall day brought in 61 buyers and many more spectators. The sale grossed $81340 selling46 lots for an average of $1768 with buyers from three states including Virginia, NorthCarolina and New York. This year the sale included commercial cattle as well as purebreds.The purebreds grossed $63,900, selling 36 lots for an average of $1778 and the commercialcattle grossed $17,440, selling 10 lots for an average of $1744.The Top Selling Lots ~ Lot 11 and Lot 12 ~ Lot 11 - LPH Blackap 808 - A 2008 daughteror TC Total 410 and out of Sherrod Blackcap 0062. She sold bred to SydGen CC & 7,due to calve 12/16/2011. She was consigned by Legacy at Pine Hill Farm, Forest, VA andsold to Tom Zone, Sanford, NC for $3,100. Lot 12 also consigned by Legacy at Pine HillFarm is a 2008 daughter of TC Total 410 and out of Sherrod Blackcap 0062. She sold bredto Connealy Final Product, due to calve 12/10/2011. She sold to Cameron Simmons ofMoneta, VA for $3,100.The Top Selling Open Heifer ~ Lot 27 - W H S Miss LL Burgess 46Y - A 2010 daughterof W H S Limelight 64V and out of W H S 878 Burgess 32R. She sold open. She wasconsigned by Shelton Angus Farm, Gretna, VA and sold to Tharrington Farm, Boydton, VAfor $2,450.The Top Selling Cow/Calf Pair ~ Lot 6 & A - A 2008 daughter of Mytty In Focus and outof SHAF Miss Skymere 878. She sold with a 10/11/2011 bull calf at side sired by Ebony’sGrandmaster (Simmental Bull). The pair was consigned by Jon Collins, Vernon Hill, VA andsold to Greensboro Plantation, Chase City, VA for $2,500.Southside Angus Association would like to send Mike McDowell and his family forallowing us to have the sale at his facilities. We would also like to thank Robert Tucker forgenerously donating his time to auctioneer for us and Steve Furrow and Zach Tucker fordonating their time to work the ring. A big Thanks also goes to the consignors for bringingexcellent cattle as well as the supporters of the 2011 Foundation Female Sale. We lookforward to seeing you again next year.
